Qualifications of Support Families
Generally, regulations require:
- Parents must be adults (age requirements vary by agency policy).
- Homes must have adequate space, be safe, in good repair, and must comply with home safety checks.
- Parents must pass personal background checks.
- Members of the family must participate in a home study.
- Parents need to be able to read and write (educational requirements vary by agency policy).
- Parents must participate in training and may also need to gain some experience to complete the process.
Most importantly, a Support Family must have a deep appreciation of the responsibilities of parenting, an earnest desire to make a long-term commitment to a child, and a willingness to learn how best to help a child with disabilities. |
