Functional Needs

Children with developmental disabilities may have a variety of functional needs related to their disability.  A functional need relates to the amount and type of assistance or support a person needs because of a limitation in performing daily living activities.  Examples include:

  • physical assistance with bathing or dressing because of limited motor control due to cerebral palsy
  • a sign interpreter to facilitate communication for someone who is deaf
  • a wheel chair to enable mobility for someone who cannot walk
  • management of a feeding tube because of a medical condition that impairs swallowing
  • supervision or management of funds for someone who doesn’t understand the value of money
