Our Mission
EveryChild’s mission is to create a system that ensures children with disabilities grow up in families instead of institutions.
We are working toward finding ways for families to be better supported to enable them to care for children at home. Helping parents keep or bring their children home with support is always the first priority, but when that isn’t possible, we believe children should have another way to enjoy the benefits of family life, and parents should have an alternative to institutional placement.
While many people are working to develop better supports for families, we saw a gap when families couldn’t care for their children at home, even with support. Much of our emphasis is on filling that gap in a way that does not require nurturing families to lose custody of their children or for children to lose their emotional connection with their families. To fill this gap, we are devoting energy to creating a system where community families can help by offering their home to a child in collaboration with their family. We reach out to community families to help. We call these community families Support Families to distinguish them from traditional foster care which involves temporary care after removal for abuse, neglect, or relinquishment.
