Children Who Need Support Families
In Texas, most children with disabilities who need Support Families have loving parents who have circumstances that make it difficult for them to care for their children at home. A smaller number of children need Support Families because the state child protective system has removed them from their parents’ home as a result of abuse or neglect or relinquishment.
Many children with disabilities are currently living in institutions like nursing homes or residential facilities designated for persons with developmental disabilities. Others may be at risk of institutionalization unless another family is willing and able to provide a home for them.
Children who need a Support Family vary in age from infants to young adults and have a developmental disability with varying degrees of functional needs, ranging from moderate to significant. Some children have multiple disabilities.
